The brackish water extracted from the coal seams is treated to very high standards to make it suitable for beneficial use in agriculture, groundwater systems and environmental flow enhancement.
We undertake extensive groundwater monitoring throughout the entire duration of our operations; monitoring of water levels and quality in the most commonly used aquifers as well as geological layers not generally accessed for groundwater.
We take care to use materials and energy as efficiently as possible in our operations, constantly implementing and upgrading initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions and waste. Any waste we do create on site is removed and disposed of appropriately.
Before we start work on any property, we undertake environmental assessments to identify any site-specific weed management requirements. We have established procedures for managing weed transfer risks, including vehicle hygiene declarations, workforce training, vehicle inspections and monitoring.
Project facilities have been designed and located to minimise the potential impact on identified culturally significant areas listed under the Queensland Heritage Act 1992 (Qld). The majority of listed shared heritage sites are found in the major towns, distant from any planned construction activities. These include public buildings, memorials, houses, churches and cemeteries.
We ensure our activities allow for the protection and preservation of areas or items of high significance to the community and region.
We manage any impact on Aboriginal cultural heritage within the Framework of the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act 2003 (Qld). Cultural heritage assessments are undertaken with relevant Aboriginal Groups. These include known sites such as scar trees, scatters of stone artefacts and shell middens.
Through our involvement with GISERA, as well as our own testing and monitoring, we gather data on social, economic and environmental features of local regions and assess any impact from our operations on land, water, biodiversity and community.
Australia Pacific LNG and CSIRO are founding members of GISERA, a research alliance established in 2011. GISERA delivers constructive, objective and publicly available research into the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the natural gas industry. GISERA is researching issues in Queensland related to groundwater and surface water, biodiversity, greenhouse gases, land management, the marine environment and socio-economic impacts.
An Environmental Impact Statement is a document prepared to describe the potential impacts of a proposed activity. It describes the impacts and details ways to avoid and mitigate negative impacts.
